Saas
05 април 2007
One of the world?s top resorts in more ways than one, Saas Fee is located beneath one of Switzerland?s highest mountains, the Dom. It offers one of the world?s biggest skiable verticals and is usually skiable throughout the season because the resort itself, though a traditional village, is so high up. Saas Fee is also remarkable in that it has never really had any car traffic - the road from the valley only reached the resort in 1951, at which point it decided to ban car traffic to a big car-park at the edge of the village.

Skiing only came to the fore here as recently as the 1960s, although the resort has been in existence for centuries, with a population of more than 250 in the mid-19th century, when other resorts famous today (like Meribel or Verbier), were just summer cattle pasture! Saas Fee caught up fast though, installing plenty of hi-tech lifts and buildings on the mountains all around, including an underground funicular railway up to the year round glacier ski area (one of the world?s 5 largest lift-served) and the world?s highest revolving restaurant up at 3,500m (just under 11,500 feet).

The resort itself is an idyllic, peaceful, car-free alpine centre, with evening action to be had if you?re looking for it. There?s an excellent sports and leisure complex and other good off-slope facilities, which include a choice of more than 60 restaurants.
