Murren
05 април 2007
Murren is an idyllic village perched high up in the famous Jungfrau region of Switzerland. Neighbouring resorts on the shared lift pass include Wengen and Grindelwald. The resort has only 300 year round residents and is car-free. Drivers park down in the valley and take either a cable car (tram) or a 110 year old mountain railway up to the village.

Murren is one of the resorts that can claim to be the first place where Alpine skiing took place - back in 1922. The first ever Alpine World Championships were organised here in 1931 also - both staged by British pioneers of skiing holidays and the British presence is strong to this day.

The Brits also instigated the first of the famous Inferno races, staged here every January for over 60 years now. The world?s longest race, it involves a 2842m (9325 feet) vertical descent from the top of the Schilthorn mountain above the resort down to the village of Lauterbrunnen in the valley, if conditions are right - one of the biggest possible skiable descents in the world. The course is 12km (8 miles) long and takes 15 minutes - or longer - to complete. There are usually more than a thousand participants.

Murren is also famous for it?s spectacular scenery, including the infamous Eiger. The best view is from the revolving restaurant on the on top of the Schilthorn mountain, also known as 'Piz Gloria' (2970m / 9750ft). From there you can see in to Germany, France and Italy on a clear day, during the one hour long 360 degree rotation. The restaurant was the hide-out of arch villain Telly Savalas in the 1969 James Bond movie On Her Majesty's Secret Service.
