Grindelwald is a very pretty, historic, year round resort, and the largest on the Jungfrau region pass, which includes Wengen and Murren. Famous for the accessibility of its glaciers and spectacular scenery, Grindelwald celebrated its 850th birthday in 1996 and the 50th anniversary of the First mountain railway in 1997. The first person to ski here was Englishman Gerald Fox who put his skis on in his hotel bedroom in 1881 and walked out through the hotel Bar to the slopes wearing them. Then followed the great and the good from around the world and today thousands of ski and snowboarding fans. With 11,700 beds and more than 50 hotels, Grindelwald is by far the biggest resort in the Jungfrau and it also has the lion?s share of the region?s skiing, sharing the the Kleine Scheidegg and Mannlichen areas with Wengen. This is accessed by cog railway from Grindelwald or a 4 person gondola from the 'suburb' of Grund. Grindelwald also has its own ski area, First, which is reached by a 6 person gondola from the village. | Vertical Drop: | 5127 ft
