Engelberg
05 април 2007
One of Switzerland?s longest established mountain resorts, Engelberg?s fame dates back to the 12th century when the Benedictine monastery, which still dominates the resort today, was initiated. The first hotels didn?t go up until the 1850s but winter sports followed soon after and today the picturesque small town, with a population of 3000 can offer a very long ski season (October to June being common, with the official ?Winter Season? running from November to the end of May) and a world class vertical of almost 2000 metres (6560 feet).

The top of this great descent is Titlis Mountain (the highest peak in central Switzerland) and the Titlis Glacier, where skiing and activities are supported by a Salomon test centre. It?s accessed by the world?s first rotating cable-car, the Titlis Rotair, which turns a 360 degree twirl giving panoramic views on every ascent. The first leg of the long trip down is steep and best left to the experts, although lower down it levels out some.

The resort is easy to reach with good road, rail and air links and there?s a lot going on off the slopes (including a sports centre, indoor ice rink, casino and public indoor swimming pool complex), plus a good choice of accommodation.
