Ch?teau d'Oex is one of the resorts in the Gstaad Superski Area - now itself part of Switzerland's largest ski pass area, the Ski Gala ticket. With a minimum purchase of four days, the Ski Gala ticket is usable in more than a dozen top Swiss resorts including Adelboden, Gstaad, Leysin, Les Diablerets and Villars. All of these resorts are linked year round by an efficient public transport system of rail and bus services, and there's no need to rush to catch the last one, as they continue through the evening.
Ch?teau d'Oex itself is the sort of idyllic Swiss village that you find on the cover of chocolate boxes and jigsaw puzzles. Much of the architecture is several centuries old and the historic altitude valley of Pays d'Enhaut of which it is a part has been inhabited for at least a thousand years.
Apart from the skiing and the international ballooning festival held there every January, attracting at least 80 competitors to make it the largest in the Alps, the village is also famous as a home to the late actor David Niven. The great man was a brilliant writer as well as actor, and his autobiography 'The Moon's A Balloon' includes many great anecdotes of his skiing experiences.
The resort is also famous for it's Etivaz cheese, created in the valley for many centuries and still made there by 70 families using traditional methods (log fires and big copper cauldrons) each summer. There's a local cheese museum and in summer a 'Cheese Trail.'
