Tignes is possibly the world?s greatest year-round ski centre. The lifts are open 365 days a year and the summer skiing is extensive, with over 40 km of runs served by 14 operating lifts. Unlike many ?summer ski resorts,? the vertical drop in Tignes remains big year round, up to 1000m (3280 feet) even in the summer. In winter that figure almost doubles to give one of the world?s biggest verticals and the bottom of it is high enough so the full vertical is skiable most of the season (other European resorts with huge verticals often lack altitude at the base so the snow melts sooner). Tignes shares the legenday ?Espace Killy? Pass with Val d'Is?re, a vast region with 310 km (nearly 200 miles) of lift linked trails. Generally regarded as one of Europe and the world?s best ski areas (as well as one of the biggest), the skiing offers something for everyone. However, it is experts who will be the most impressed, if only because they don?t find the limitations they do everywhere else. Instead there are endless of-piste options and plenty of hair-raising blacks on the marked trails themselves. Tignes is modern and not very pretty, although it is located like a spectacular moon base up at 2100m (6890 feet) - one of Euope?s highest resorts. It was ?moved? to its present location in 1952 when the French national electricity company flooded the valley where old Tignes stood to build a hydroelectric power dam. Skiing was already established in the area in the 1920's. | Vertical Drop: | 6256 ft
