Flaine
05 април 2007
Flaine is the highest resort in one of the world?s largest lift-linked ski areas, the Grand Massif. Unfortunately, the resort has a popular reputation as being one of the ugliest in the Alps, resembling a rectangular concrete multi-storey car-park stuck up a mountain. However, unbeknown to its critics, the resort is actually a design masterpiece.

"The architecture is purposely stark and functional, designed by Marcel Breuer," a representative of Flaine's tourist office comments, continuing, " ...master of the Bauhaus school, he created Flaine in a pattern of light and shade, echoing the rocks and crags at the base of the valley among the pine trees."

So there you have it. Whatever you may think of the look of Flaine, it is functional, very well designed and action packed on and off the slopes. If you want to find a bit of French ambience then just head down into the valley on ski to Sixt or Samoens, the antithesis of Flaine?s image. Back up the mountain, the wealth of non-skiing alternatives for which Flaine has become famous include the Renault Ice Driving school, the snowmobiling operation and the paragliding and hang -gliding schools. The resort was 30 years old in 1998.
