Saariselka
Tuesday, 03 April 2007
Saariselka is located in the Finnish sector of Northern Lapland in the Urho Kekkonen National Park, named after a former Finnish President. It is a popular year-round holiday village which offers visitors a unique selection of activities.

In winter the 10 km (6 miles) of trails are served by six T bar lifts giving a vertical of 180 metres (about 600 feet) - quite healthy by Finnish standards. Skiing is possible from November to May, and slopes face north and south, with two mountain restaurants to rest in. Telemarking is popular too, with rentals and a telemark school. There are 250km of cross-country tracks, 40km of them floodlit for use in the dark days of mid-winter. Snowboarders have a park with half pipe and snowmobilers have plenty of tracks to follow. There are several sleigh ride companies offering sleighs towed by horses, reindeer, dogs or snowmobiles

Other things to do include canoeing trips on the Ivalojoki river, which was famous for gold-panning in the past - and you can still give it a try today. Santa Claus' village is not far and the Northern Lights are often visible. Also, day trips are organised to see the Arctic Ocean and to the nearby igloo village at Kakslauttanen (10km / 6 miles away).

A free bus service links hotels with ski lifts between February and May.
