Brixen / Plose
Tuesday, 03 April 2007
A small but highly significant town, Brixen is long established as a major valley crossing in the Dolomites between southern and northern Europe. Brixen's popularity is a result of its combination of culture, sport, events and a very good shopping base. The town offers a wide range of facilities - including indoor ice rink and numerous bars and restaurants. Top apres ski spots include the Igloo at the base of the Plose lifts. The Disco Max, the biggest discotheque in the South Tirol, is also in town.

The skiing takes place in the Plose region above, which includes one of the world's longest black descents (at 9km, the longest slope in the South Tyrol). Brixen has the twin advantages of having it's own first rate ski area at Plose, and in being part of the vast confederation of ski resort on the Dolomiti Superski single lift ticket.

The resort's location makes it a good base for excursion to famous ski areas like Val Gardena and the resorts of the Pustertal to make maximum use of the wonderful lift ticket, or indeed to explore near neighbours in Brixen's own Valle Isarco / Eisactal Valley. The Plose skiing is reached by a six-seat gondola lift from the village of St. Andra (S. Andrea), which itself at 961 metres is a 10 km (6 mile) drive up the mountain from the city. There are several other access points higher up and around the mountain.
