Zell am See/Kaprun
31 март 2007
Zell am See is a small town on the shores of Lake Zell with a car-free center, and a wide range of shops, restaurants and off-slope activity options. Zell offers year round skiing thanks to its bus link to the glacier of neighboring Kaprun. In the summer, it is possible to make that rare combo of skiing in the morning then hitting a beach party in the afternoon for a swim - albeit by the lake, not the sea.

Zell am See's 80 km (128 miles) of trails are largely located on the Schmittenh?he mountain behind the town. There are various access points to the area, but most people staying in central Zell take the gondola, the base of which is a few minutes walk above the town center.

Intermediates enjoy Zell am See's skiing the most with more than 50 km (80+ miles) of terrain to whizz around on, including an 8 km (5 mile) trail -- the Schutt -- descending the full 1200 meter (3900+ feet) vertical back down to the resort. Advanced skiers can choose from several long medium-steep blacks descending through the forest back down to the resort and Zell has a reputation for good off-piste powder when conditions are right.

Be sure to visit Kaprun's glacier skiing on the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier. It is accessed by a ski bus which runs every 20 minutes in high season, and once an hour during other periods. Journey time is around 30 minutes and the service is free to lift pass holders.
