Saalbach-Hinterglemm-Leogang
Sunday, 01 April 2007
The second most popular destination in Austria (after the capital Vienna), Saalbach and Hinterglemm are especially popular with Dutch and German visitors.

Saalbach is marginally the larger (and louder) of the two villages, which were originally 4 km (2.5 miles) apart but have both grown so much that they now almost meet.

The two villages are neighbors in the picturesque Glemmtal Valley, a "dead end" which offers skiing on all sides and numerous access points to the slopes. The resort has a remarkable nine ski schools from which to choose.

As it is with most Austrian resorts, the altitude of Saalbach and Hinterglem is quite low but local climatic conditions (and a good deal of snow making) help to maintain the snow cover.

The Glemm Valley around the resort offers one of the best integrated ski areas in Europe, with over 200 km (125 miles) of fully lift-linked trails. You can travel in either direction around the "Ski Circus" and take a lift over to the pretty village of Leogang in the next valley.

Intermediates enjoy the vast ski area the most. It is very easy to get around, with nine different access points to the skiing and lifts from the village centers. Experts head for the North Facing Zw?lferkogel - with its 3 km (2 mile) expert mogul descent - or the 100 km (65 miles) of off-piste terrain in the company of a local guide.
