Innsbruck-Igls
Saturday, 31 March 2007
One of Europe's most beautiful and lively cities, Innsbruck is a great base for an alternative ski holiday. The formula is simple: big town shopping and night-life opportunities coupled with a great range of skiing. The International Olympic Committee apparently agreed as Innsbruck hosted the Winter Olympics in 1964 and 1976 (when Franz Klammer won his famous Gold medal).

There are now six areas on an Innsbruck lift pass, all reached by the free ski bus from the Hauptbahnhof and Landestheaterthe in the center of town. They include the local Olympic centers of Igls where you can try the bobsled run, Axamer Lizum, the tiny Tyrolean hamlets of Tulfes and Mutters, and the snow-sure glacier skiing on Stubai. The areas are 30-90 minutes outside of Innsbruck, providing a different experience to the standard ski package - no danger of resort claustrophobia or limited options and generally better prices. Scheduled flights also make Innsbruck a good long-weekend break choice from anywhere in Europe.

Innsbruck has a huge variety of bars, nightspots and restaurants ranging from McDonald's to ultra-gourmet. Of course, a visit to Innsbruck is incomplete without a night at the opera.
